PFDC receives grant from Plymouth Community Foundation

On January 12, the Community Foundation of Plymouth (CFP) presented the Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps (PFDC) with a check for $1395. This donation to the Corps will be used to purchase replacement bass drums. Our current bass drums are over 25 years old. We hope to get these replacements for the 2010 season that will match the newer snare drums. The drums are custom made by Cooperman, a company in Connecticut. The unique sound of the Plymouth drums is well known amongst the Fife & Drum community.
The Foundation selected PFDC for their efforts in preserving the history of our country. PFDC strives to preserve our nation's musical heritage through the art of fifing and drumming, which was used during times of war to relay commands to soldiers, direct movements of units, as well as, to provide inspiration and marching rhythm.
Established in 2005, the Community Foundation of Plymouth (CFP) is the second geographic affiliate fund of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. The Fund is a permanent endowment established to support programs, events and projects in the greater Plymouth area which includes the City of Plymouth, Plymouth Township, and parts of Northville, Salem and Superior Townships. While maintaining its own identity, CFP benefits from the professional staff, fund management and investment expertise of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation.
The donation to the Corps is part of the CFP's grant program to support the Plymouth area "For Good, For Ever." "Making grants to improve the quality of life in the Plymouth area is what our organization is all about," said Jim Jabara, CFP Advisory Committee Chair. “These grants are a great example of the power of endowment to yield positive investments in our community.”
Donations to the Community Foundation of Plymouth, or any of the other permanently endowed funds at the Community Foundation, are eligible for a State of Michigan tax credit. You can mail donations to:

The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps is made up of youth, ages 12 to 18, from various local communities (Novi, Northville, Livonia, Dearborn Heights, Redford, etc.) and of course Plymouth. The Corps has a long history in Plymouth, where it was founded in November 1971 and was the first fife and drum corps in the Midwest. This extraordinary group of young people performs at historic sites, in parades, at festivals and corporate events from Michigan to the Atlantic Coast, from Quebec to South Carolina. The music played by the Corps spans the 17th to 20th centuries with an emphasis on traditional fife and drum melodies from the Revolutionary War. Unique to the Corps are medleys containing three and four part harmonies and traditional tunes presented in contemporary settings. The Corps' season runs from April through October with typically 40 to 50 performances each season.
The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps is a non-profit organization. If you are interested in making a donation or booking the PFDC for a performance, please visit our website for additional information: www.pfdc.us

New CD coming soon!

A new collection of fifing and drumming from the 2008 Corps will soon be available. The tracks have been cut and cleaned, the artwork has been approved, and the names of the members spell-checked. It all goes off to the printer in a matter of days. Look for the new CD to be available for Christmas. Soon you'll be able to buy a CD here on the web-site, via iTunes, and in local retail outlets. Plans are also underway to get copies off to some of our favorite tour destinations such as Bennington Vt., Old Salem Village NC, and downtown Plymouth.

Tentativly titled Honor, this new CD contains 14 songs from the PFDC repertoire such as Butterfly/Brandy Medley; Clem Medley; Hull's Victory and the 2008 drum solo "Homey Plays This".

IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT...

Although Mother Nature turned the thermostat up on us a bit, PFDC's first visit to South Carolina was fantastic. We had excellent venues with large and very appreciative crowds. Here are a few highlights from this year's trip: Appearances/visits during our trip:

Thanks to the tour committe and all the parents who gave so generously of their time to help make this year's trip a hit! Don't forget, the 2009 tour will be taking us in the opposite direction as we invade Canada. Starting with a possible overnight in Fort Henry in Hamilton and possibly including Ottowa and Quebec it looks to be a great trip next summer.
